Cloud & virtualization

The server closet is a decision, not a default.

Most companies never chose to keep a physical server - it just accumulated. Moving it to Azure, or virtualizing what stays on-site with Hyper-V or VMware, deserves the same clear ownership treatment as everything else in this relationship.

Before moving anything

Five questions that belong ahead of the migration, not during it.

Inventory first

Name what genuinely still depends on the physical box - a file share, a line-of-business database, print or identity services - versus what has already quietly moved to Microsoft 365 or another cloud tool.

Workload fit

Some applications virtualize or move to Azure cleanly. Others have a vendor that still requires specific on-premises hardware, licensing, or network conditions worth confirming before you commit.

Platform choice

Staying virtualized on-site with Hyper-V or VMware is a different commitment than moving workloads into Azure - different cost pattern, different maintenance, different failure modes.

Continuity

A single physical server is a single point of failure. Virtualization and cloud infrastructure change that risk profile - they do not eliminate the need for tested backup and recovery.

Timeline and disruption

A migration runs in stages with a rollback point, not as a single weekend cutover, especially once a line-of-business application is involved.

Where scope matters

Keeping infrastructure running is not the same commitment as moving it.

Can fit recurring scope

Patching and backing up a virtualized environment, coordinating an Azure subscription's access and cost alerts, and folding server maintenance into the same monthly cadence as everything else already in scope.

May need separate work

The migration itself - data transfer, cutover planning, and application retesting - plus Azure architecture design or licensing decisions. This usually runs as its own project; see IT projects and office moves for how that gets scoped and priced.

Honest limit: this page does not claim a specific cloud platform certification or a count of completed migrations. Which platform fits, and what the move actually costs, is confirmed through discovery - not assumed from what a domain name implies.

Before you commit

Questions worth answering before the migration is scheduled.

  • Is the current server still under warranty, and what's the plan if it fails before a decision gets made?
  • Which applications have a vendor statement about running on Azure, Hyper-V, or VMware - and which don't?
  • What is a realistic maintenance window for the cutover, and who signs off on it?
  • Does moving to Azure shift this cost from a capital purchase to a monthly operating expense - and is that trade-off actually understood and budgeted?

Connect the work

Confirm what happens if this infrastructure fails before it's moved.
