Backup and continuity

A backup is only real once someone has tested restoring it.

Backup exists to answer one question under pressure: can we get this back, and how long will it take? Continuity planning turns that question into an agreed answer before an incident forces it.

What a backup conversation should cover

Four questions before trusting a backup.

Coverage

Which systems, mailboxes, files, and configurations are actually backed up-and which are explicitly excluded?

Retention

How long are backups kept, and what happens once retention expires?

Recovery expectations

What is a realistic, agreed understanding of restore time and possible data loss-not a marketing promise?

Testing

How and how often is a restore actually verified, rather than assumed to work?

Where scope matters

Backup administration is not disaster-recovery architecture.

Can fit recurring scope

Microsoft 365 mailbox and file backup administration, backup job monitoring, and restore requests handled within agreed scope.

May need separate work

Full disaster-recovery architecture for line-of-business servers, backup strategy for systems outside the managed environment, and compliance-driven retention programs. If that server itself is due for a decision, see cloud server migration and virtualization.

Honest limits

This page does not publish a recovery-time promise.

A specific recovery time objective and recovery-point objective depend on the systems involved, the backup method, and the agreed scope-those figures belong in writing, not on a marketing page.

  • What is explicitly not backed up today?
  • Who is authorized to request and approve a restore?
  • What is the plan if Microsoft 365 itself has a provider-side outage-a different event than a backup failure?

Connect the work

See what an outage actually costs before it happens.
