'We monitor your systems' means very different things at different providers. Here is what recurring monitoring can actually name and check - and the live, 24/7-NOC claim this site deliberately does not make.
What actually gets checked
Whether supported devices have received available operating-system and application updates, and which are overdue - reviewed on a recurring cadence rather than assumed current.
Whether last night's or last week's backup job actually completed, not just whether it was scheduled to run. A failed job is a finding, not a silent gap.
Whether the anti-malware or EDR agent is installed, updated, and actually reporting on each supported device - not just installed once at setup and forgotten.
Unusual sign-in patterns, accounts that should have been disabled, and multi-factor authentication gaps, reviewed as part of the same cadence.
Storage, mailbox, and license thresholds approaching a limit, flagged before they become an outage or a blocked user.
What this is, and isn't
A defined list of checks - like the ones above - reviewed on an agreed cadence, with exceptions turned into a visible action or a decision for you.
A staffed 24/7 network operations center, live human eyes on a dashboard around the clock, or a guaranteed detection or response time. Those are specific, expensive commitments - if a provider claims them, ask for the staffing and the written SLA.
